NASA

The Pennsylvania State University’s Center for Science and the Schools, in conjunction with NASA’s Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP), seeks to hire two individuals as Education Specialists. Openings exist at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center in southern California and Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, with the likelihood of future openings at other NASA centers. These are 48 week non-tenure track academic appointments for one year with excellent possibility of renewal; all full-time University benefits apply.

AESP Education Specialists support the use of NASA instructional materials and programs by K-12 students, teachers, and the general public, with primary focus on the professional development of K-12 teachers of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. Responsibilities for these positions include working closely with higher education to strengthen pre-service and in-service teacher education, working with educators to plan and teach space-related content, working with NASA projects on K-12 programming, and facilitating collaborations between K-12 schools and scientists and engineers working in universities, industry, and NASA. Significant national travel is required: AESP Education Specialists deliver programs to schools in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

Required qualifications for these positions include Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM discipline or STEM education area, teaching certification in one or more U.S. states, at least 3 years of experience teaching STEM-related subjects, evidence of leadership experience in K-12 educational settings, and successful experience delivering professional development to K-12 teachers. The Washington Center

The Washington Center would like to announce a special summer internship program that could provide students from Eastern Kentucky University with substantial financial assistance by means of federally-funded placements with the Federal Aviation Administration. 

Selected students from your institution have the opportunity to intern during summer 2008 with the FAA. Students studying Mathematics, Statistics and other related majors are strongly encouraged to apply for this internship opportunity.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to receive a favorable background investigation.  Students who are accepted into the FAA program will receive funding covering the cost of Washington Center program and housing fees, plus earn a weekly stipend of $250.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.  All applications should be received in March.  Applicants from Eastern Kentucky University must have approval from their campus liaison.  If students are unsure of their campus liaison, they should e-mail info@twc.edu. Wolfram

Wolfram Research is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2008 Student Intern Program.  They are looking for students who are familiar with Mathematica, programming, systems administration, marketing, public relations, graphic design, business development, or sales, and many other areas.

Applications must be received by March 1, 2008.  A limited number of year-round internships as well as science and technology R&D fellowships are also available.

Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati

Six talented undergraduate students will be chosen to engage in the study of mathematical cryptology. Participants will be involved in attacking unsolved problems in mathematical cryptology. They will be provided wqith housing and meals. The program will also provide a stipend for each participant, travel support to and from the NKU campus, and travel support for each student to participate in one professional conference during the academic year that follows their participation in the program.

Selection of participants will begin on March 9, 2008.
