During the Spring 2005 semester Professor Anthony Hilton held the Vernon Wilson Endowed Chair position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Eastern Kentucky University. He conducted a Seminar in Graph Theory and Combinatorics and hosted a number of invited scholars to present their research to the seminar and collaborate with faculty in the department.. These include:
Mike gave a talk to the Seminar titled "Upper bounds on the chromatic index of a multigraph" (see abstract).Pictured below we see Anthony explaining some of his ideas to Mike. To the left is a picture of Mike and Anthony rubbing Daniel Boone's left boot, a local tradition that is supposed to bring them luck.
The title of his first talk was "Topology and Combinatorics: Borsuk's Theorem, Kneser's conjecture and Lovasz's proof: A survey featuring also Tucker's Lemma and Matousek's proof" (that's just the title! see the abstract). He also gave a talk Thursday February 17 on "Total Colourings and the Beta Parameter" (abstract). Pictured below is Fred giving his Tuesday afternoon talk and the gathering afterward at a local pub (Catherine & Dirk Schlingmann, Shane Redmond, Doug Chatham (from Morehead), Tony Hilton, Fred Holroyd, Mary Hilton, and Matt Cropper).

He gave a nice talk on Thursday, February 24, on "Domination in graphs" (see the abstract). Pictured below is Mike giving his Thursday afternoon talk to the seminar and yet another gathering afterward at the local pub (Catherine and Dirk Schlingmann, Matt Cropper, Tony and Mary Hilton, and Mike and Sara Plummer).

His seminar talk was on "Extremal problems on packing of sparse graphs" (see the abstract). Pictured below we have Mary Hilton and Sasha taking a walk about campus, another pleasant time at the pub ( Peter Klassen, Dirk Schlingmann, Tony Hilton, Matt Cropper, Sasha Kostachka, Mary Hilton, Catherine Schlingmann, and Gudrun Klassen ), and dinner at Boone Tavern ( Sasha, Mary, Catherine, Dirk, Gudrun, Peter, and Tony ).
Pete gave a nice talk to the seminar Tuesday, March 29, on "Strong (t,r)-regularity" (abstract) and followed that with another one Thursday, March 31, on "Hall t-chromatic graphs" (abstract). Pictured below are, Mary, Pete, and Tony, relaxing over some pizza and beverage after a couple sets of tennis. Pete giving his seminar talk on Thursday. A different pub this time (Mike LeVan (Transy), Matt, Tony, Pete, and Mary) and at dinner with Tony, Mary, Don Greenwell, and Pete.
The 19th Annual Symposium in Mathematical, Statistical and Computer Sciences was held on April 8 (see abstracts of talks). There were six undergraduate and six graduate student talks given. The invited speakers were Jeno Lehel (Title: "On unavoidable objects") and Russ May (Title: "An Overview of Quantum Computing"). The picture on the right is of Jeno avoiding objects during his talk.
Curt gave a talk Tuesday, April 12 to the seminar on "The History of Embedding Partial 4-Cycle Systems" (abstract) and gave a second talk Thursday, April 14 on "The Euler Office Problem" (abstract). Pictured below is a shot of Curt flushing out a 4-Cycle system during his Tuesday talk and Curt, Matt, Tony, and Mary at the aftermath.![]()

John, our last visitor of the semester, gave a talk Thursday, April 21, to the seminar on "Maximum size antichains and the COLEX order" (abstract). The picture shows John discussing some maths with Tony and Matt.
